Marketing and Motivation in PT/OT

Patient’s do not comply with their home exercise programs. That is not my opinion, it is based on research. However, home exercises are essential to achieving optimal rehab outcomes. Is is therefore our responsibility as rehab clinicians to motivate our patients in order to follow their home exercise prescription. How do you motivate your patients?

Perhaps we as clinicians should take a cue from advertisers. Successful marketers utilize psychology to sell their products to the public. It’s not an accident that beautiful models are used in ad campaigns to sell items that have nothing to do with beauty. It is our duty to sell our patients on the need to adhere to their home exercise program. We need them to buy into our prescription.
