Practical CEUs for Every Patient Visit

Ari Ginsberg, PT, DPT, MSIOP

After a recent live webinar, an attendee sent me an email thanking me for providing courses that were useful in daily patient care. The comment made me reflect on the difference between Psychology for the Body’s CEUs and other CEUs focused on technical and manual aspects of physical and occupational therapy. Other courses I have attended in the past on technical subjects such as vestibular rehab or knee rehab were great, however, their usefulness only applied to a percentage of patients in my physical therapy practice. I was a home care physical therapist and saw an array of patients with different conditions. A small percentage of those patients benefited from the expertise gained from those CEU webinars.

The CEUs provided by Psychology for the Body address fundamental concepts that apply to every visit with every patient. Bedside manner is integral to optimizing the odds of your patient achieving their goals. Another topic covered is burnout, a major issue in the world of rehab. If a therapist is burnt out, it will manifest in subpar care to all their patients. Motivating patients is another key element that should be utilized in every patient visit. Patients need to be motivated to work hard and adhere to their HEPs. Although manual and technical expertise are flashy, mastery of the fundamentals is definitely applicable to every patient visit.
